British Fell Relay Championship

Kettlewell - Saturday 15 October 2011
A message from Fell Captain Richard Howard

This event is always one of the most anticipated dates in the fell calendar and this year really was as good as it gets. Although helped by the glorious Autumn sunshine enhancing the already breathtaking scenery around Kettlewell, Bingley Harriers have to be congratulated for putting on a fantastic day.
It was good to see 2 DDT teams out competing in such a prestigious event. We may be a bit behind the big boys, but like our little tent pitched in between those of Bingley Harriers, Keswick AC and other equally illustrious clubs, we were in there amongst them.

Besides the running itself, there was a great atmosphere throughout, with the shared anticipation of runners waiting to set off on their legs and the huge cheers that greeted all runners when they finished, right to the very last one. Few sports can offer the chance for athletes of all standards to compete with the best from all over England, Scotland and Wales.

National Cross Country Success

Saturday 25 February at Parliament Hill Fields, London

A message from Ross McClelland

A proud day for theTravellers as seven fit and able warriors did battle on the foothills of London at the National Cross Country Championships. The first challenge of the day was to navigate our way to Parliament Hill via Wembley and a few eye-opening sights in Camden Town. Once tagged, kited and photographed in our DDT team colours we toed the line with 1700 other mortal souls.

Elbows out and spikes sharpened we fought our way up the first climb. The adrenaline flowed, the crowds screamed and the sense of occasion was completely overwhelming.

Mud, steep climbs and abandoned traffic cones all combined to provide an authentic cross -country course. The pain increased as the 12k event started to bite. Fellow runners dropped by the way side and the inevitable periods of self-doubt began to set in. The negative thoughts slowly evaporated as the fast and furious downhill finish offered the opportunity to test both body and mind to the extreme.

Success equates to the sight of DDT vests pushing to the line at a national event. In the immediate aftermath, no words were spoken, just a smile and a warm handshake to acknowledge a ‘true’ team effort. A special mention for Pete Andrews, who took time out from his own race to aid a fellow runner in distress.

Video footage of the event is available on www.athleticos.org . Definitely not to be missed! Results are also available by following the link on this page. The team finshed in 104th position with Ross McClelland the first Traveller home in 510th place.
